Policy in the time of COVID

Image of marquee saying

Housing is critical to protect our communities from COVID-19 now and the foundation for our region and state’s health and success ahead. We must have both an action plan for crisis response and crisis recovery, and NPH is calling on state and national lawmakers to:

  • Take emergency actions to get people into homes, support people who are unhoused, and ensure that everyone has a safe place they can socially distance.
  • Pass emergency policies now that keep people in their homes  — with strong eviction moratoria, massive rent relief, and continuation of affordable housing services and operations.
  • Prioritize housing as essential to our recovery and as the foundation for our region, state, and nation’s health and success ahead.

NPH recently shared a letter to the administration, alongside our state partners, highlighting the need for immediate regulatory actions to help affordable housing.

We expect to be consulting more frequently with the Legislative and Regulatory issues working groups on these emergency policies. Please contact NPH's Policy Director Pedro Galvao if you would like more information on any of our advocacy efforts.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the state legislature will remain closed until at least May 4. This interruption in legislative business has resulted in some remote work to continue critical conversations; yet when lawmakers return to work, they've been alerted that they will be addressing fewer bills and a smaller budget. While housing and homelessness -- especially in this pandemic -- remains a priority issue for California, we have learned that AB3154 (Rivas), one of NPH's co-sponsored priority bills, will be tabled until next year.

Other priority bills remain on the table, and NPH is committed to advancing these critical policies for our future. Click here for resources and opportunities to weigh in on these bills.

For more updates and opportunities to engage on, please join us for our Legislative Issues Committee Meeting (via conference call) on Thursday, May 7. We encourage members to sign up for in order to discuss and strategize opportunities to continue making progress for affordable housing in California.

NPH’s mission and values have long demonstrated our commitment to working together to advance affordable homes as the foundation for thriving individuals, families, and neighborhoods. Our current COVID-19 environment calls on us all to affirm these commitments and unite together to uphold these values.

Despite the uncertainty, concern, and worry we all hold for our communities and our families, we’re inviting you to also find hope, light, and energy in this incredible movement and membership. We invite you to read our 2019 Annual Report for a dive into some of the most impactful work we accomplished together last year.

2020 Census

Photo saying

The 2020 United States Census is a critical tool for our communities and our work. Every 10 years, people in California and across the country fill out their Census questionnaires to help provide an accurate count of all people in the United States and help decide how billions of dollars will reach our families. Making sure all of our California neighbors are counted means strengthening our collective voice and supporting our state's ability to attract federal funding to build more affordable homes and address homelessness.
