John, we are not even halfway through 2024, and there have already been nearly 200 mass shootings. You won’t find a community anywhere in the country that hasn’t been impacted by the epidemic of gun violence.
We are not powerless to solve this shameful scourge on our county. But it’s going to take political courage. And with so many senseless, preventable gun tragedies, we need Congress to act quickly.
Our biggest challenge is that the GOP is completely beholden to the gun lobby. That’s why with each tragic shooting, we hear the same thing from Republicans: empty “thoughts and prayers” for victims and their families, and the same hollow rhetoric that “now is not the time” for gun control.
Frankly, I’m sick and tired of it.
“Thoughts and prayers” do absolutely nothing to protect our communities, or to keep weapons of war off the streets. We need leaders who have the guts and moral clarity to do something about this deadly epidemic.
Democrats are serious about this, John. I’m proud to have helped pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act when Democrats held the majority in the last Congress. It was a small but important step toward reducing gun violence, and the most significant action Congress has taken on this issue in decades. But there’s so much more we must do.
If you care about ending gun violence and want to see real solutions, there’s a clear choice in this year’s elections. Another two years of a GOP-controlled House guarantees nothing will happen to reduce gun violence.
As we kick off National Gun Violence Awareness Month and Wear Orange Weekend, I need your help to prove that a majority of Americans support commonsense gun reforms that save lives. If you agree, add your name here and pledge to vote for gun safety champions up and down the ballot this year.
Thanks for taking a stand.
