Dear john,
President Biden announced last week that he would take executive action to effectively normalize high numbers of illegal immigrant encounters on our southern border. His executive order requires the border to be closed if daily encounters reach 2,500 per day. While this threshold is lower than the average we have seen throughout the past three years of Joe Biden, it essentially says that if this number isn't reached, the border will remain open. We must also bear in mind that because its an executive order, Biden can still revoke it any time he wants.
Like many of you, the question I'm asking is: Why has it taken 42 months--1,300 days--for Biden to finally consider taking any action to address the border crisis that presents an unprecedented national security threat to the United States?
Up to this point, all Joe Biden has done is blame Republicans, "root causes" like climate change and his predecessor, President Donald Trump for this crisis. Does Biden actually recall that he himself was the one who, on more than 60 occasions implemented policies that have created the border crisis?
Could it be that it's an election year, that folks will vote in four months time, and that he is very underwater in the polls for his handling of the border crisis he created?
House Republicans passed our own comprehensive piece of legislation, H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act over a year ago. This bill, which still sits on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's desk would immediately put in place Trump-era, common sense policies to stop the flow of illegal immigration.
The facts speak for themselves. Under Joe Biden's tenure, we have seen nearly nine million illegal encounters, which is about five times as many as under President Trump.
Biden can pretend he's taking action to secure our southern border, but until he reinstates the tried and true policies of President Trump, this crisis will continue.
