Can I share a quick story, John?

When I was a kid, I had no idea I'll one day be running against Ted Cruz to become our first Black Senator from Texas. But even at a young age, he was already fighting to overcome tough odds.

I was born in Dallas and raised by a single mom. I never knew my dad, and I doubt anyone would've bet on me to make it to the NFL or law school, let alone the halls of Congress.

But I had a strong support system of public school teachers and coaches and the good folks at our local YMCA. Thanks to them, I earned a full-ride football scholarship to Baylor, a school my family never could've afforded otherwise.

Football taught me how to be part of a team and put our shared goals ahead of my own accomplishments. I'm running against Ted Cruz because Texans deserve a Senator whose team is Texas. Ted Cruz has always been in this for himself.

After retiring from the NFL, I decided to pursue another lifelong dream. Inspired by heroes like John Lewis and Martin Luther King Jr., I went to law school and became a civil rights lawyer.

I chose to specialize in voting rights because I saw what was happening in Texas: a systemic and targeted attempt to make it harder for certain folks to vote. There's nothing more un-American than trying to stop people from voting.

When I felt like my community's values weren't being represented, I decided to run for Congress. Nobody gave me a chance in that race, but with a strong grassroots team by my side, I built a broad coalition of folks from across the political spectrum and defeated a 22-year Republican incumbent.

Now, I'm ready to do it again against Ted Cruz. And yes, I'm the underdog in this race. Extremist Republicans are spending millions of dollars to keep Cruz in office. But in spite of that, we were even in the polls at 41% each. With folks like you on my team, I know I can beat the odds like I've done so many times before and deliver real leadership for Texans.

That's why I'm personally asking: Will you chip in $5, $25, or anything at all to help power our grassroots movement through Election Day and help me defeat Ted Cruz?

Thank you so much – I'm truly grateful to have you with me in this fight.

Colin
