June is nationally recognized as Pride Month — a time to celebrate the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s also a time to honor the progress we’ve made and recognize the work that still lies ahead in realizing the promises of America.

As a mom and former English teacher, I know how to spot a bully. I also know how frustrating it can be to feel unseen and unaccepted. That's why it deeply concerns me when I see politicians spend all their time interfering in people’s lives instead of working to improve them.

Let’s be clear—we cannot allow politicians to dismantle civil liberties and undermine our democracy. This month, let’s take time to think about the Americans serving in our armed forces for a safer America even as they feel less safe, and let’s remember all of those who have fought and died for this country for the promise of freedom—for people to live how they want to live and love who they want to love.

We cannot allow hate to legislate.

So, this month, we embrace the fact that by protecting civil liberties for some, we protect them for all. And let’s hold tight to simple truths I tell my kids all the time: “You are loved” is a full sentence; being loud doesn’t make you right; kindness is not weakness.
