John, care should be a public good. But far too often, we’re seeing greedy investors buy out care facilities, resulting in worse care options for all of us.

70% of nursing homes across the country are owned by for-profit companies. Since private equity firms set their sights on nursing homes 10 years ago, we’ve seen evidence that their ownership has led to understaffing and a lower quality of care. We’re now seeing private equity firms trying to do the same to home care and child care agencies.

Here’s the truth about the private equity model: they buy up companies and try to double or triple their investment in 4-7 years by slashing costs and worsening quality. Then, they sell the companies off, with no regard for the consumer. We’ve seen them do this with nursing homes – we can’t let them do it again.

We all depend on care. Access to childcare and home- and community-based care are crucial public services that we all will need at some point in life. Anything that prioritizes profit over the quality of care would have a detrimental effect on all of us.

If enough of us speak out against this, we can build a movement to protect our care. We need more long-term public investments in care to make sure families have access to care when and where they need it and care workers are paid a fair wage.
