Hi, Think Congress is a mess now? Just wait. The Supreme Court just wiped away some of the last meaningful remaining restrictions on gerrymandering — the practice of manipulating elections by drawing district lines to favor one political party over the other.1 That means we'll have even more clowns in Congress like Marjorie Taylor Greene who have no chance of ever losing reelection, no matter how extreme or incompetent they might be. It means even less responsiveness to constituents, since 90% of districts are already totally noncompetitive.2 And it almost surely means an even bigger partisan bias toward Republicans. That's why we've mobilized tens of thousands of people to demand Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act to end partisan, racist gerrymandering. In the wake of this awful Supreme Court decision, we must turn up the heat.3
Gerrymandering is one of the core reasons Congress is such a dumpster fire. Already, 9 in 10 congressional districts are so slanted to one party or the other that there's no way the incumbent party could ever lose.4 And because the GOP tends to benefit more from gerrymandering, it's a built-in advantage for Republicans that has allowed them to lose the popular vote for Congress yet still keep the majority.5 The Supreme Court legalized partisan gerrymandering in 2019, and last week they eliminated any meaningful legal restrictions on racial gerrymandering, so state legislatures can now draw maps to severely diminish the political power of Black voters.6 Justice Clarence Thomas wrote a concurring opinion that would go even further by getting rid of the "one person, one vote" rule, so districts wouldn't even need to have the same population.7 Enough is enough. We need to pass the Freedom to Vote Act to end partisan, racist gerrymandering, and as a grassroots-funded organization, we rely on donations from people like you to fund this vital work.
