As the local election results continue to trickle in, it's wonderful to report that the number of pro-life councillors elected so far has increased significantly over the local elections held in 2019.

This terrific showing is, first and foremost, down to the toil, dedication and personal sacrifices of the candidates who courageously put their names before the electorate.

Given that these were local elections, dealing with mainly local issues, most pro-life candidates didn't explicitly contest the election on the right-to-life issue. What set them apart from other candidates however was their willingness to openly and boldly declare their support for the pro-life position in advance of the election, often in the face of hostile opposition.

As an example of the ongoing battle for seats, Melissa Byrne of Aontú (and current Outreach Officer of Students for Life) is at this very minute involved in a nail-biting fight for the last seat in the Newbridge local electoral area. We wish her and all the other pro-life candidates who are still in the hunt for seats all the very best!

In addition to the many pro-life candidates already elected, there’s an equally big number who only narrowly missed out, some by just a handful of votes. They deserve every bit as much credit for flying the pro-life flag as those who were elected. If they keep going and continue to make inroads in their local electoral area, there's no reason why they won't succeed next time round.

So far, having analysed the results of just over 50% of the election counts, of the number of candidates who signed the pro-life questionnaire before the election and/or are known to be solidly pro-life, 38 have been elected. We will update on this figure in the coming days.

In the days leading up to the election, our newspaper ads reached over half a million people asking them to vote pro-life. Tens of thousands visited the PLC online ‘Voter Guide’ to check where the candidates in their local area stood on the right-to-life issue before voting. We are confident that the huge amount of work we did in the months leading up to the election greatly increased the number of people who reflected on the pro-life issue before voting.

With the increased pro-life representation in elected office across the country, the prospect of positive pro-life change increases exponentially. Reducing the number of abortions taking place has to be the number one priority.

Thanks to everyone who volunteered their assistance in recent weeks to pro-life candidates in their local area. Whether they were elected on this occasion or not, your efforts were not in vain. To those who considered helping out but didn't in the end, please don't sit it out next time around!

The gains in this election are noteworthy and will make a difference, but we need everyone on board playing their part to bring about the kind of change that will truly turn the tide in a pro-life direction.
