Hi John,

State budget negotiations are happening now and unfolding quickly, and I want to share an update on where things stand and NPH’s strategy ahead:

First, legislative leaders have responded to our requests to restore funding for the Multifamily Housing Program (MHP), the state’s largest and most flexible program for affordable housing production. But nothing is final until budget negotiations come to a close this Saturday, June 15, when the state legislature must pass a budget.

👉 We Must Act Now! It’s critical that we urge the Governor not to roll back our progress on affordable housing during this budget cycle. We also need to tell lawmakers to place a statewide affordable housing bond on the November ballot and approve an updated ACA 1, which will give local communities more flexibility to support affordable housing and take pressure off future state budgets. Submit a quick, pre-filled message to the Governor, your senator, and your assemblymember all at once, urging them to support these efforts:

NPH’s 3 Steps in 2024 for State Lawmakers to Tackle Housing Insecurity ✅

💲 Maintain and Accelerate Affordable Housing Progress in the State Budget We must preserve all the progress we’ve achieved together by maintaining/restoring affordable housing investments in the 2024-25 budget.

📜 Approve an Updated ACA 1, Giving Communities More Flexibility to Support Affordable Housing A new version of ACA 1 on the November ballot will address concerns raised about last year’s legislation — narrowing a proposed expansion of local revenue authority and focusing on what Californians care about the most: Helping every community build more safe and stable affordable homes.

🗳️ Place an Affordable Housing Bond on the November Ballot AB 1657 (Wicks) will help fund the construction of more than 35,000 homes affordable to low-income families — while preserving more than 93,000 existing affordable homes and creating homeownership opportunities for 13,000 families.
