MEMO: State of the Race in WA-06 – Emily Randall
With 40 days to go until voting starts, I wanted to give you an update on the state of the race — and why donations from top grassroots supporters like you will make the difference in this close, crowded election.
As you’ll see below, the campaign is firing on all cylinders, but we’re $58,000 short of where we need to be for the final FEC deadline at midnight on June 30. If that’s all you need to hear, chip in $6 or any amount now — otherwise, keep reading:

OVERVIEW:
Emily currently represents the 26th legislative district, which makes up 21% of the 6th Congressional District. In 2018, Emily defeated a MAGA extremist by just 102 votes in one of the most competitive races in Washington state. Emily has outperformed statewide candidates in this district, including our Democratic opponent Hilary Franz.
Emily has earned nearly every consequential endorsement including Senator Patty Murray, Reps. Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03), and Planned Parenthood Action Fund, in addition to over 300 organizations, elected officials and community leaders from every county in the district. Most recently, Emily received the sole endorsement of the Washington State Labor Council AFL-CIO, the most impactful labor endorsement in Washington state politics.
POLLING:
In mid-April, a survey commissioned by the campaign found that Emily is very well-positioned to advance to the general election. Emily and Democrat Hilary Franz start off statistically tied (19% and 21%, respectively). After balanced introductions of all candidates on the ballot, Emily jumps to a double digit lead well outside the margin of error (32% Randall, 21% Franz, 41% Republican MacEwen).
The polling is clear — the more voters learn about Emily, the more they support her! Donate now to ensure we can reach more voters.

REPUBLICAN CHALLENGER:
The Washington State GOP sees the 6th as a pickup opportunity. State Senator Drew MacEwen was first elected in 2012. He opposes abortion rights, same-sex marriage, and vote by mail. In 2015, MacEwen was part of an effort to discredit Planned Parenthood.
As the leading Republican in the race, we expect MacEwen will earn one of the top two spots in the August 6th primary and be on the ballot in November.
Emily has defeated well-funded anti-abortion Republicans before, and she’s the strongest candidate to defeat Drew MacEwen in November.

IN THE NEWS:
Tacoma News Tribune: "Unionized staff members endorse candidate opposing their current boss at WA state agency"
Union employees working for the Department of Natural Resources have voted to endorse the candidate who is running in direct opposition to their current boss in a South Sound congressional race. …
Washington Public Employees Association President Amanda Hacker said too many politicians ignore the needs of working people once they get into office after saying the right things while on the campaign trail, and that “not every candidate who says they care about labor values will actually follow through.”
LGBTQ Nation: "Out Sen. Emily Randall is standing up for women’s choice as she runs for Congress"
“I feel really lucky to get to represent the community where I grew up, where my parents grew up, and to share the experiences of so many of my hard-working neighbors, and I want to work just as hard for them as they work for their communities and their families.”
The Hill: "Democratic primary in Washington heats up with high-profile endorsements"
… Randall scored one of the most surprising endorsements of the election cycle so far, with Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray (D-Wash.) taking the unusual step of jumping into a primary.

FUNDRAISING:
Raising money is tough. It’s even tougher for working-class candidates without a ton of super-wealthy friends and family.
It’s even tougher when some big donors see you as a “risk” because you’re a woman, LGBTQ+, Latina… or all three.
It’s even tougher when you’re running a values-aligned campaign without a dime from Corporate PACs, Big Oil, or Big Pharma.
In just a few months, nearly 4,000 individuals have chipped in to own a piece of this campaign — that’s INCREDIBLE. But to win this crowded primary, we need to go beyond that.
By the next FEC reporting deadline on June 30, we want to hit 6,000 grassroots donors to win the 6th District.
That means we’re asking for YOUR support today to close our $58,000 budget gap, but we’re also asking you to bring your friends, family, and network into this campaign as well.
The only way to win against Big Money is by organizing the largest people-powered campaign this district has ever seen. Let’s do this — chip in now:
