Hi John,

To call the immigration and border security crisis a big issue heading into this election would be an understatement. Americans have ranked it as the top issue facing the country in Gallup’s poll for three straight months.

Customs and Border Protection reported 2.5 million encounters of migrants occurring at the U.S.-Mexico border in fiscal year 2023 – the highest figure on record. From October 2022 to September 2023, Border Patrol officials arrested 169 people whose names matched those on the U.S. terrorist watch list. Many migrants are claiming asylum once apprehended, creating a backlog in our asylum courts that now exceeds three million cases. Our broken immigration system doesn’t work for Americans or for the millions of undocumented people who have to live in the shadows.

That’s why the commonsense majority will be looking to see what President Biden and former President Trump have to say about these challenges at the debate later this month. To help us understand the issue better heading into election season, we are thrilled to have Jessica M. Vaughan, Director of Policy Studies for the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) as our next guest on No Labels Talks.
