Years ago, a union steelworker gave him a pin of a yellow canary in a birdcage. It’s a reminder of a time when miners would bring canaries into the mines to check for dangerous levels of gas.

If the canary died, the miners knew to get out. At that time, workers didn’t have strong unions or a government that would fight for them.
