Hey John,
In case you didn’t know, today is International Children’s Day. Whether you’re a child, a parent, or both, I hope that all of you get the opportunity to spend time with your families today to celebrate.
Days like this are always bittersweet for me, John. The pain of losing your child to gun violence never goes away, but it’s especially painful around these times.
I miss the little moments I shared with Jordan throughout his childhood. Like when I’d sit upstairs in the house and watch through the windows as Jordan and his friends played in the cul-de-sac. Or when I’d talk to Jordan about our faith, and he’d ask questions about God that showed his deep curiosity and open heart.
These memories always bring a smile to my face, but I also grieve what was taken from me. When Jordan was senselessly shot and killed at a gas station when he was just 16 years old, his murderer robbed us of a lifetime of memories that were left to be made.
I want nothing more than to watch Jordan walk across the stage at his graduation, or to see him at the altar at his wedding. I want to hold my grandchildren, and watch Jordan be the father I knew he’d be for them.
Jordan was the greatest gift from God I ever received. I’ll forever cherish the years I had with him, and I’ll always fight to prevent any other families from losing their child the way I lost mine.
I’m wishing you an International Children's Day full of joy, gratitude, and warmth.
With love,
Lucy McBath
