Last week in Wisconsin, the GOP revealed its playbook for November 2020. Wisconsin Republicans succeeded at keeping the state from delaying its primaries due to the pandemic. The Supreme Court of the United States upheld their argument to prevent the extension of an absentee ballot deadline in an insulting and dangerous ruling. The result was massive voter suppression. In the city of Milwaukee, only 5 of 180 polling places remained open.
Nevertheless, this time, the voters won in the end. Wisconsin voters elected liberal-leaning judge Jill Karofsky to the state Supreme Court, beating out the conservative incumbent. The effects of this victory will ripple on for generations, so we are overjoyed about this news.
However, we are outraged that it seems to be the new normal that people have to risk their lives and the health of the community to practice their constitutionally-granted right to vote. It is clear that Republicans intend to suppress voter turnout by any and all means, no matter how extreme. We have to stop this now - and our MoCs must use their Power of the Purse to ensure free and fair elections in 2020.
Along with Indivisible National, and a growing number of other organizations, we are pushing our MoCs to get serious about democracy reform at the time when it’s most needed - right now.
Here’s what you need to do.
We’re also asking you to ensure that nobody gets left behind by relief bills in California. This week we want to bring attention to California's farmworkers. They are some of the most important people in our state, doing some of the most essential work, with some of the least pay, least healthcare access, least support, and fewest protections. Many are undocumented workers just trying to make a better life for themselves and their families, doing the jobs that much of America won't do.
At the very least, we owe them our absolute support by doing what we can to help keep them and their families safe, and in effect, helping protect our food supply. Assemblymember Rivas (D-Hollister) has introduced a package of bills that do just that with the California Farmworker COVID-19 Relief Package.
Contact your State Assembly Member and State Senator Wiener and tell them to support and vote for this package of essential bills.
