Now that Donald Trump has been convicted of 34 felonies, the big remaining question is what his sentence will be.
Many people have said they don’t think Trump will face any jail time, but I read an interesting article on MSNBC today that made me think twice.
Justice Merchan will make the final decision at Trump’s sentencing hearing on July 11 based on a few factors: the seriousness of the crime, the history and character of the defendant and the public interest.
The judge will consider the seriousness of Trump’s conduct including the fact that this case involves public corruption relating to the 2016 election. He will also take into account Trump’s behavior during the trial including his posts on social media.
All this adds up to an interesting theory of how Trump may end up in jail. What the Republicans do if their presidential nominee is in jail is above my pay grade…
Ultimately I think it’s most likely Trump will receive a heavy fine, house arrest, or community service. But we should also prepare ourselves for the real possibility that Trump will be sentenced to jail for his crimes. And obviously, that will have major implications for this year’s election and our political system for years to come.
