Dear John,
In 2000, George W. Bush won the presidency despite losing the national popular vote by 543,000 votes.
Then in 2016, Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton despite getting nearly 2.9 million fewer votes.
Does anyone actually think this system makes sense? I think not.
The good news is that we are on the verge of a major victory to fix the broken Electoral College system by convincing Michigan to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, a nonpartisan effort to replace the current Electoral College system with a legal agreement among the states to award their electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote.
Already, 17 states have joined the compact, Michigan would bring us to 224 electoral votes, a huge step forward in the fight to end the undemocratic Electoral College, and just 46 away from the 270 we need to send the Electoral College system to the dustbin of history.
Let’s get this done! Will you donate $5 a month to Inequality Media to help spread the word, get the truth out, and end the undemocratic Electoral College system?

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in monthly.
Under the current Electoral College system, candidates spend almost all their time campaigning in just a handful of swing states.
If you live in a solidly blue state like California or Massachusetts or deep red state like Texas or Utah, then there’s virtually zero chance your vote will make a difference in the outcome, because everyone already knows which way your state will vote.
As a result, if you’re one of the unlucky majority that doesn’t live in a battleground state, then chances are no candidate will visit your state or think much about your local concerns.
And let’s be absolutely clear: This is not about just helping one party or the other. In 2004, if John Kerry had gotten just 110,000 more votes in Ohio — roughly 1.5% of the vote — he would have become president while losing the national popular vote to George W. Bush by more than 3 million votes.
Friends, the stakes are simply too high to stop pushing. And if we fall short and there’s another Electoral College meltdown, our democracy may not survive. Will you donate $5 a month to Inequality Media to get out the truth and help end the undemocratic Electoral College system?
