Dear Colleagues,
We hope you and your families are staying safe in these trying times.

If the Covid-19 pandemic teaches us anything, it is that we need to do more to prepare for foreseeable challenges, climate change very much included.

We thought you would be interested in a major essay that James Baker, George Shultz and Ted Halstead just published in Foreign Affairs. It seeks to reframe the national climate debate in ways that can strengthen America’s economic and strategic position in a post Covid-19 world. Mike Allen of Axios featured it in his influential Top 10 list yesterday.

Baker, Shultz and Halstead tackle head-on the concerns preventing many Republicans from supporting greater climate ambition by explaining how a well-designed climate policy can transform perceived vulnerabilities into major strategic opportunities. They spell out how the Council’s bipartisan plan would advance America’s geopolitical interests, put the U.S. at the forefront of a clean-energy future, enhance the competitiveness of U.S.-based firms and allow all Americans to benefit directly from emission reductions.

As they argue, America cannot remain the world’s foremost superpower if it is not also its leading energy innovator. That is why they propose a new U.S.-led climate alliance, underpinned by mutual economic incentives.

Best regards and stay safe,
