Friend -- On June 6, 1944, 225 American Rangers arrived by ship to Pointe du Hoc, a cliff on the coast of Normandy, France.

They jumped into the waves and stormed the beach. They had only 30 minutes to eliminate the Nazi guns high above them that could halt the Allied invasion.

They reached the top. They breached Hitler's Atlantic Wall. They turned the tide of war.

And they saved the world.

When we talk about democracy, what we don't talk about enough is how hard it is. The most natural instinct is to walk away -- to be selfish, to force our will upon others, to seize power, never give it up. Democracy asks the hardest of things -- to believe that we're a part of something bigger than ourselves.

Democracy begins with each of us. And it only survives if we're willing to stand up to save it.

That's what the Rangers of Pointe du Hoc decided 80 years ago on D-Day.

And that's what, today, we have to ask ourselves yet again: Will we stand against tyranny, against evil, against hate? Will we protect freedom in our time? Will we defend democracy?
