Lives Depend Upon It

What to Know: Lives depend on getting America back to work again, experts say.

The TPPF Take: Government officials must recognize that keeping our economy shut down will have health consequences, too.

“Like any exercise of governmental power, stay-at-home orders should be least restrictive between their goals and civil liberties,” says TPPF’s Robert Henneke. “And orders should be based upon the latest and best information. We should be ready to revisit public policies that affect us all as we get new data, and be ready to reopen the economy when it’s reasonably safe to do so.”

Moment of Truth for Universities

What to Know: The coronavirus could have a profound effect on colleges and universities—and result in many of them closing.

The TPF Take: A big disruption is coming for higher education.

“Higher education faces adversity as thousands of institutions shut their physical campuses and move students online,” says TPPF’s Thomas Lindsay. “It’s clear that postsecondary education will be more important than ever for gaining and keeping a secure footing in the workforce. And it’s evident that colleges are going to have to be a lot more creative—and cooperative—about how they meet that need.”

Ballot Shenanigans

What to Know: Even as many push for expanding access to mail-in ballots for upcoming elections, experts warn about the risks for fraud.

The TPPF Take: Election integrity is vital to our representative form of government.

“Mail-in ballots are particularly susceptible to fraud,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “If Texas is seen as a battleground again in 2020, for example, how many votes might be purchased for the ballot harvesters to reap? It’s important that we all be aware of the risks of relying solely on mail-in ballots."
