Good afternoon,
This morning, the 13th edition of the TaxPayers’ Alliance’s annual Town Hall Rich List was released. You can read it in full here.
In 2018-19 there were at least 2,667 council employees who received total remuneration in excess of £100,000. That's 226 more than in 2017-18, and the highest number since 2013-14.
Our annual report comes as council tax hikes are implemented across the UK. As the country continues to battle the coronavirus crisis, the TPA has called for council tax to be frozen and local authority spending to be focused on frontline health and social care services.
The Town Hall Rich List shines a light on the town hall bosses who’ve got it right, but also allows taxpayers to hold to account those who aren’t delivering value for money.
The media coverage for the report has been phenomenal. In less than 12 hours, we have received over 230 media hits. This includes:
-
dozens of local news outlets up and down the country like the Yorkshire Post, The Herald in Glasgow and the South Wales Guardian
-
national papers the Daily Telegraph, The Sun, the Daily Mail and the Daily Express
-
numerous broadcast hits including regional BBC outlets
The TPA team is remarkable. Even during these strange times, they’ve managed to deliver a groundbreaking report and land it in so many media outlets. I’m proud of the high-quality work they do for taxpayers on such a consistent basis.
It’s crucial we keep the show on the road. If you have recently donated to the TPA, thank you.
But if you haven’t yet made your 2020 donation, or if you wish to donate for the first time, we can guarantee that your support will make an impact.

If you’d like to give, but in another way, do just let me know in reply to this email.
Over the coming years, the repair job needed on the public finances will be staggering. We have to be there to make the case for a pro-enterprise approach and to ramp up our War on Waste in the public sector. Anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated.
Very best wishes,
John
