Governor Walz and First Lady Gwen Walz traveled to France, where they attended the 80th Anniversary D-Day Presidential Ceremony and recognized the Minnesotans who fought in World War II
"Today in Normandy, we joined President Biden and other world leaders to recognize the 80th anniversary of D-Day – a stark reminder of the freedoms we are so fortunate to have and the cost of attaining them," said Governor Walz. "To our WWII veterans: Our state, country, and world thank you for your service."
Governor Walz announced that 35 law enforcement agencies across the state will receive funding for the new Intensive Comprehensive Peace Officer Education and Training Grant Program.
"Law enforcement is a critical public service. We cannot keep our communities safe without trained, licensed officers – this program will help interested Minnesotans enter the profession," said Governor Walz. "This funding is a demonstration of our commitment to support officer training and build a force that reflects the communities they serve."
The Intensive Comprehensive Peace Officer Education and Training Grant Program complements existing peace officer recruiting programs, including Pathway to Policing.
Lieutenant Governor Flanagan and Minnesota Department of Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen toured Gar-Lin Dairy Farm in Eyota to highlight Dairy Month.
"Farmers like Dana Allen-Tully – who operates this Eyota dairy farm and leads the Minnesota Corn Growers Association – keep our families fed," said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. "We have a nation-leading dairy industry in Minnesota, and our administration is committed to keeping it that way."
They also gave an update on HPAI and reminded Minnesotans it’s safe to consume pasteurized dairy products.
"As our administration supports farmers through the most recent HPAI outbreak, know that pasteurized milk is safe and will remain safe to consume," continued Lieutenant Governor Flanagan.
Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan announced the opening of applications for three Minnesota student teacher grants and loan repayment programs. The programs will play a critical role in supporting new teachers as they enter the profession.
"We depend on our educators day in and day out," said Governor Walz. "By providing financial assistance, we’re helping more people choose a career in education, and ensuring the continued strength of our teacher workforce."
"Teachers do incredible work in the classroom to educate and nurture our children every day. From kindergarten to high school, high-quality teachers are shaping future generations. Yet, the burden of financial hardship creates an obstacle for many seeking a career in education," said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. "Through these programs we are growing and diversifying our teacher workforce to fill vital positions. Our teachers are a priority and we’re ensuring that they’re supported."
