Last week, voters in Wisconsin were forced with a choice no one should have to make: protect their health or practice their right to vote. That is NOT democracy. It’s voter suppression.
That’s why we’ve joined a coalition of pro-democracy reform groups to demand that Congress Protect Our Vote.
We already know how important reforming our democracy is to ending gun violence -- that’s why a key tenet of our Peace Plan for a Safer America is to empower the next generation and ensure the right to vote safely and easily for everyone. When a few senators bought by the gun lobby can prevent legislation that an overwhelming majority of American citizens support, it’s clear that we need to reform our democracy. When we see that the same communities who suffer from voter disenfranchisement are the very same people who are disproportionately impacted by gun violence -- communities of color -- it is clear that we need to reform our democracy. When people are asked to put their lives at risk just to exercise their constitutional right to vote and be heard, it is clear we need to reform our democracy.
Ensuring the right to vote is key to almost every single one of our goals for 2020 and beyond. The critical funding we are asking for would be used by states to increase vote-by-mail, expand early voting, online, and same-day registration, and ensure the safety of voters and poll workers, amongst other reforms.
Here are 3 quick actions you can take to help us do that:
- Email legislators and demand they include $4 billion in funding to secure our elections in the next stimulus package.
- Call your senators: 1-833-444-9149
- Tweet about the need to #ProtectOurVote
We need to act NOW to ensure that these protections are in place in time for the election in November if we have any hope of turning out the youth vote.
