Gun violence in America is a public health epidemic — one that takes the lives of over 115 people every single day. If we are going to change this devastating crisis, we need to tackle it head-on using a public health approach.

That’s why Brady is proud to announce a new advisory council of healthcare professionals tackling firearm violence using a public health approach. The council will guide our This Is Our Lane [[link removed]] campaign — a grassroots movement empowering healthcare professionals with the training, knowledge, and skills to care for patients, advocate for data-driven solutions, increase public safety, and be a voice of change to end gun violence.

Our new council is chaired by Dr. Joseph Sakran, a gun violence survivor, lead trauma surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and the founder of This Is Our Lane. In 2018, following a comment by the NRA that doctors should “stay in their lane” regarding gun violence, Dr. Sakran launched @ThisIsOurLane to showcase the role healthcare professionals play in gun violence prevention. The grassroots initiative, now a part of Brady, gained international attention and sparked major action, helping win historic federal research funding.

Dr. Sakran is joined by twelve other doctors and nurses with impressive backgrounds in research and advocacy who have fought relentlessly for gun violence prevention. Our council’s objectives include increasing funding for firearm violence prevention research, encouraging the Office of the Surgeon General to pen a report on firearm violence prevention, establishing an advocacy training program for healthcare professionals, and more.

Already, our council has made headway on some of these initiatives: Members were invited to two White House events this week where they met with the Office of Gun Violence Prevention to discuss public health approaches to combating gun violence.

June is Gun Violence Awareness Month — Help Us Honor With Action!

As part of National Gun Violence Awareness Month, we’re featuring Liz Dunning [[link removed]?] , a gun violence survivor and Brady’s Chief Development and Engagement Officer. In 2003, Liz’s mom, Nancy Dunning, was shot and killed while opening her front door in Alexandria, VA. It took nearly 12 years for Liz and her family to bring her mom’s murderer to justice. This long battle prompted Liz to get involved in advocacy efforts to prevent gun violence.

She joined Brady in 2019, bringing 25 years of expertise in nonprofit management, strategy, and organizational development. Liz now works to prevent another family from suffering the same grief and loss that she did. A mom herself, Liz understands firsthand the lasting trauma of gun violence. And that's why she fights with Brady.

Liz continues to honor the memory of her mother with action. On her mom’s birthday, 15 years after she was killed, Liz commemorated Nancy’s memory with a 26-mile marathon [[link removed]?] to celebrate the 26 years of life they shared. She raised nearly $30,000 in her mother’s name for Brady.

Save the Date: June 21st is ASK Day!

It’s that time of the year again: Summer break is almost here and so is ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Day!

ASK Day is June 21, the first day of summer, when kids typically spend more time at home and at the homes of friends and family. Parents ask all types of safety questions before their children visit another home. ASK Day is when we remind parents, guardians, and caretakers to add one more question: “Is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?”

Every year, thousands of kids are injured or killed as a result of unsecured firearms. That’s why we’re calling on supporters like you to recognize ASK Day by asking about unsecured firearms in the home and spreading this life-saving message. It’s just one more question that can help save a child’s life. As we approach ASK Day on June 21, use our toolkit to find easy ways to start the conversation and get involved in your community. Donor Spotlight: Keith Sendall

At Brady, we are proud to feature supporters who fuel our life-saving mission to free America from gun violence. This week, that generous supporter is Ken Sendall, an active donor for nearly 30 years.

After a successful career spent helping people prepare for retirement, Keith was able to retire as well, and has spent much of his time traveling and volunteering for Brady. 

For Keith, the work he does with Brady is personal. Like far too many others, Keith knows firsthand about the need for gun violence prevention. When he was living in Oakland, CA, Keith was held at gunpoint, an experience that led to deep feelings of frustration and unease. Upon his retirement in 2014, Keith sought ways to get more involved with the gun violence prevention movement, and he approached Brady to volunteer his time. He is hopeful that soon, the gun industry will be held accountable for its actions and that people will finally be put above profits.
