Hi John,
I’m getting in touch in case you missed my email about pushing our next government to champion the Fossil Fuel Treaty at COP29 this year. The UN climate meeting in November will be the first major climate summit after the general election, and a chance for the next UK government to show it is serious about tackling the global climate crisis. It will be a vital moment in our campaign for this important treaty – and we need to be ready.

It’s no secret that the COP summits are subject to lobbying from the fossil fuel industry. The Fossil Fuel Treaty offers an alternative that can address the climate emergency with the urgency needed and that can complement the COP. It’s a global plan to tackle big oil and gas head-on. To quickly and fairly end the fossil fuel era for good.

We urgently need to prepare to push the next UK government to support the Fossil Fuel Treaty. This means organising and mobilising across the UK right now – contacting candidates during the campaign to demand they back an urgent fossil fuel phase-out, and preparing to step up the campaign for the Fossil Fuel Treaty when the next government is formed.

A donation from you could help cover the costs of this vital next stage of the campaign – such as producing briefing materials, promoting online actions, organising stunts and working with candidates and the many new MPs there will be in parliament after the election.

Getting the UK to back the treaty could help inspire other rich and polluting nations to follow suit – creating the meaningful climate action we desperately need.

Hi John,
I’m sure you’ll be shocked to hear that nearly 2,500 fossil fuel lobbyists attended last year’s UN climate negotiations, COP28 – almost five times as many as the previous year. It’s clear the real solution to the climate crisis is to stop burning fossil fuels. But fossil fuel giants don’t want to see their industry wound down – because they’re raking in billions in profits.
In an attempt to protect their profits, the number of corporate lobbyists at the COP climate talks has rocketed in recent years. And now a veteran of the oil industry has been appointed chair of the next COP in Azerbaijan this November. This is a glaring clash of interests poised to hijack negotiations and hold back meaningful progress once again.
That is why we urgently need a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty – a global plan to tackle the fossil fuel industry head on and end the fossil fuel era. This treaty would meaningfully work alongside the COP process, without corporations in the driving seat.
We have a plan to make this happen, but we need to act fast. With the general election coming up on 4 July, we need the next UK government to champion the Fossil Fuel Treaty at COP29 in November. ** The Fossil Fuel Treaty: a fast and fair global exit plan
------------------------------------------------------------
Alarmingly, no country is currently on track to meet the Paris Agreement goal: to limit long-term global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. The UN’s COP conferences are still important, but they’re not working fast enough. We need a new space for governments to negotiate a fossil fuel phase-out that isn't mired by industry influence. The treaty is promising to provide just that. It’s a solution that can guide a fair transition away from coal, oil, and gas, ensuring that no worker, community or country is left behind in the global green transition.
I’m sure you’ll agree that ending fossil fuels must be done justly. For example, the campaign for a Fossil Fuel Treaty demands financial support for countries which have been purposefully disadvantaged by fossil fuel extraction. And to help them transition towards 100% renewable energy, as well as diversifying their economies.
Excitingly, a growing number of nations, cities and subnational governments, including Fiji, California, the European Parliament and the World Health Organisation, have already endorsed the treaty. And in the UK, cities including London, Brighton, Edinburgh and Birmingham have recently joined.
Now we need the next UK government to commit too – to back the treaty at COP, rather than playing into the hands of corporate lobbyists. Can you donate to help us mobilise across the country and push the treaty from the bottom up?
