In today's New York Times Morning newsletter, David Leonhardt features the PCCC's work to help Democratic leaders improve economic messaging strategy. We call it Fight Theory. With the presidential debate this month, the timing is spot on.
"Polls show that many of the policies enacted by President Biden are popular...Still, many of these policies receive relatively little attention...
"Adam Green, co-founder of Progressive Change Campaign Committee, a Democratic-aligned group, blames what he calls fight theory. 'It’s not enough to have positive messaging,' Green said. 'Voters must see drama, clash, and an ongoing saga in order for our message to break through a cluttered news environment.'"
We are engaging the White House and congressional leaders -- including on our weekly polling with our partners at Data for Progress -- and strategizing with them on leveraging fight theory to win this election.
The Times cites a recent fight that we worked with Democratic leaders to put into the national conversations:
"Biden’s campaign and other Democrats are likely to emphasize the contrast as the campaign picks up. They will try to pick more fights. One example: After Senator Tim Scott, a potential Trump running mate, introduced a measure this spring to repeal Biden’s limit on credit-card late fees, prominent Democrats like Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren highlighted the issue."
Similarly, before the State of the Union, Politico previewed the PCCC's "biggest recommendation" to the White House based on months of polling with Data For Progress: "The single line there is: 'Republicans want to cut taxes for billionaires and cut Social Security. Democrats want to protect Social Security from cuts and ensure billionaires pay their fair share in taxes,'" Green said.
Politico's Eugene Daniels reported that Biden used this fight language "nearly verbatim" in the State of the Union. Blue Rose Research and Data For Progress independently tested 36 messages President Biden used in the State Of The Union and found that ours was "the most effective message" of them all. Biden has continued to use it on the campaign trail in swing states like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Carolina. See it here:
This election is too important for Democrats to just highlight our achievements and hope voters notice. We need to get in the ring and make Republicans answer for their stances.
Thanks for being a bold progressive.
