Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day — a day we mark to ensure we never relent from our fight to end this scourge on our nation’s families and communities.

As a Navy veteran, I know that weapons of war have no place on our streets. As a mom, I know what it’s like to send your kids off to school and pray they return home safely.

And as a legislator, I know that gun safety laws work. Thanks to strong gun laws in New Jersey, gun violence rates have decreased significantly, while states that lack such standards have seen even more incidents of deadly gun violence.

The staggering rates of gun violence in our country are unacceptable. Families and communities are being torn apart. No other developed country in the world sees anything like this. Yet, somehow, Washington Republicans have refused to act. They have cowered to the gun lobby instead of taking action to protect the very communities they represent.

It doesn’t have to be this way.
