Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Happy Pride, DC! Earlier this week, we were proud — for the second year in a row — to raise the Progress Pride flag outside the John A. Wilson Building.

Flag Raising

I’m proud to live in and lead a city that has long been a leader in LGBTQIA+ rights. The DC Human Rights Act remains one of the most comprehensive laws of its kind in the nation. Many Washingtonians remember when, in 2009, DC was among the first states in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage, ahead of the 2015 Supreme Court ruling. Today, we have kids in DC who have only ever known a DC with marriage equality. And that is what we always want to do – to make sure we are passing on a city that is stronger and more inclusive for each generation. We want everyone in our city, from our youngest residents to our oldest residents, to live proudly, to be loved, supported, and safe.

On Saturday, we will celebrate our DC Values at the Capital Pride Parade, using the new route (in preparation for World Pride 2025). I hope you will join us!

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
