In this week's roundup: The 80th anniversary of D-Day and my work on the Farm Bill. Dear Friend, In this week's roundup: The 80th anniversary of D-Day and my work on the Farm Bill. That and more – remember to follow my Facebook page by clicking here and my Twitter page by clicking here to stay up-to-date throughout the week! MEETING WITH OUR FARMERS AND PRODUCERS INFORMED MY WORK ON THE FARM BILL Over the last year and a half, I made it a point to meet with farmers and producers on my Feenstra Agriculture Tour to ensure that the priorities of Iowa agriculture were included in the Farm Bill. Because of their input and advocacy, we secured important victories for Iowa agriculture like strengthening crop insurance, investing in new export opportunities, fighting Prop 12, funding animal disease prevention, and keeping China away from our farmland. The first picture below is from my time with the Buena Vista County Pork Producers in Storm Lake, the second picture is from my Farm Bill town hall with farmers and producers in Treynor, and the third picture is from my Farm Bill town hall with Senator Ernst in Audubon. TALKING ABOUT MY BILL TO IMPROVE THE LIVESTOCK INDEMNITY PROGRAM FOR OUR CATTLE PRODUCERS Under current law, payment rates from the Livestock Indemnity Program are only updated every year. My bill – the Livestock Indemnity Program Improvement Act – will cut that timeframe down to every three months so that our cattle producers receive a fair and accurate price for their livestock in the event of severe weather or an animal disease outbreak. CHECK OUT MY CONVERSATION BELOW! MEETING WITH THE IOWA PROPANE GAS ASSOCIATION I enjoyed meeting with the Iowa Propane Gas Association this week to talk about the importance of propane production to our economy and rural communities. I will continue to support American energy production and the jobs that our energy industry creates. WORKING TO KEEP SOCIAL SECURITY SOLVENT FOR OUR SENIORS The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) forecasts that the Social Security Trust Fund – more officially known as the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) Trust Fund – will run out of sufficient funds by 2033 to pay Social Security benefits in full. That means that our seniors face anywhere between a 21% and 25% cut to their benefits. Serving on the House Ways and Means Committee, I will continue to work to protect Social Security for our seniors who worked a lifetime for these earned benefits! WATCH MY REMARKS ON THE HOUSE WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE BELOW! MY RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT BIDEN'S EXECUTIVE ORDER ON THE BORDER President Biden's executive order to "secure" the border is absolutely worthless. His policies have left our border wide open and our country vulnerable to terrorists and drug traffickers. Our border patrol agents and our families deserve better. DELIVERING A STRONG FARM BILL FOR IOWA Our farmers and producers are counting on us to get the Farm Bill passed and signed into law. With high inflation, low commodity prices, and constricted export markets, we can’t wait any longer to get this Farm Bill over the finish line. Watch my full remarks before the House Agriculture Committee below! 4TH DISTRICT FUN FACT: THE WORLD'S LARGEST CONTINUOUS OUTDOOR RODEO! Today's fun fact comes to us from Sidney, Iowa — home of the world's largest continuous outdoor rodeo! Beginning in 1924, the Sidney Iowa Championship Rodeo draws about 38,000 visitors every year! Today and always, we honor and remember those brave Americans — the foundation of the Greatest Generation — who fought and died to preserve the blessings of liberty and freedom. MY WEEKLY COLUMN: ADVOCATING FOR IOWA FAMILIES AND TAXPAYERS IN CONGRESS Our economy is in tough shape. Cumulative inflation has skyrocketed by nearly 20% since President Biden took office while real wages have fallen by roughly 4.4%. The Bureau of Economic Analysis estimated that the economy grew at a rate of only 1.3% in the first quarter of 2024 – three points lower than predicted – while interest rates have surpassed their highest levels in 23 years. Credit-card debt held by American families has exceeded $1 trillion, the household savings rate fell by 3.2%, the average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage has hovered around 7%, and approximately two-thirds of middle-class families have reported experiencing financial hardship in the Biden economy. As a longtime advocate for tax reform and a member of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, I have worked to deliver real tax relief for our families, farmers, and businesses so that hardworking taxpayers can keep more of their hard-earned money and combat the crushing impacts of record inflation.
