Rep. Troy E. Nehls Introduces Legislation to Honor Medal of Honor Recipient with Post Office Renaming Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap on what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. This Week in Washington DC Rep. Troy E. Nehls Introduces Legislation to Honor Medal of Honor Recipient with Post Office Renaming Rep. Troy E. Nehls Introduces Legislation to Honor Medal ... WASHINGTON, D.C. -Today, Congressman Troy E. Read more nehls.house.gov I'm proud to have introduced legislation to rename the post office at 1810 FM 1462 in Rosharon, Texas, after Clarence E. Sasser, a great American hero. Mr. Sasser was born and raised near Rosharon, Texas. While serving in the United States Army as a medic during the Vietnam War, then-Private First Class (PFC) Sasser selflessly sprang into action to administer medical aid to his unit after they came under heavy fire from three different directions. Despite having incurred wounds and a tremendous loss of blood, PFC Sasser dragged himself through the mud to tend to his fellow wounded soldiers on an open rice paddy. For his heroic actions that day, Specialist 5th Class Sasser was presented the Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest and most prestigious military decoration. Mr. Sasser is an inspiration not only to TX-22 but to our entire country. He embodies the very best of the United States, and renaming a post office is the least we can do to commemorate his selfless service to our country. Read more about my legislation HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Responds to President Biden’s Election Year Border Ploy On Tuesday, President Joe Biden issued an executive order using Section 212(f) and Section 215(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) to suspend asylum requests once the daily crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border of illegal aliens top 2,500 between ports of entry. Section 212(f) of the INA states, “[w]henever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.” Further, Section 215(a) of the INA states that it is “unlawful…for any alien to depart from or enter or attempt to depart from or enter the United States except under such reasonable rules, regulations, and orders, and subject to such limitations and exceptions as the President may prescribe.” Last June, during a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing, I suggested the Biden Administration use Section 212(f) of the INA to stop the border crisis, and I was told by the Democrat witness at the hearing that was impossible. Now, five months away from the 2024 presidential election, President Biden is using Section 212(f) of the INA to "secure" the southern border. Nothing has changed in the last 363 days, except over 2 million more alien encounters and President Biden’s disastrous poll numbers. Now that his poll numbers are in the toilet, suddenly, Section 212(f) is looking better to him and his administration to trick the American people into believing he cares. If President Biden really cared, he’d use Section 212(f) to suspend all illegal crossings until we are able to deport everyone who has entered unlawfully under President Biden’s watch. Saying, "We’ll stop them after 2,500 illegal crossings" is like saying, "We’ll start arresting after 2,500 burglaries." Make no mistake, President Biden inherited a secure border, all thanks to the successful policies of President Donald Trump. All President Biden had to do was keep President Trump’s border policies in place, and the American people would be safe today. Instead, President Biden took over 60 executive actions that created the absolute chaos we are seeing at our nation’s borders and across our country. Shame on him for this weak attempt to use Section 212(f) after more than 9.5 million people have crossed our borders since he took office. It’s too little, too late. Read my full statement HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Votes 'YES' to Pass the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill This week, the United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 8580, the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025, which provides funding for the Department of Defense (DOD), the Department of Affairs (VA), and related agencies. I proudly voted 'YES' on this legislation, which honors our nation's commitment to our Veterans by fully funding Veterans' healthcare programs, benefits, and VA programs. Additionally, this important legislation bolsters our national security and readiness, prevents federal funds from being used to advance the Biden Administration's woke ideological crusade through the DOD and VA, and protects the Second Amendment rights of our nation's Veterans. I applaud the work of my House Republican colleagues on this critical legislation, which is a testament to our unwavering support for those who have selflessly served our country. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Staff Meets with TX-22 Students from the Institute for Civility in Our Nation's Capital This week, members of my staff in Washington, D.C., met with students from Palacios and Wharton High Schools at an Institute for Civility Student Legislative Seminar. During the meeting, the group discussed mental health and healthcare, along with my legislation, the Save Our Shrimpers Act, which would prohibit federal funds from being made available to International Financial Institutions (IFIs) to finance any activity relating to shrimp farming, shrimp processing, or the export of shrimp in any foreign country to the United States.
