Dear Neighbor,

I'm reaching out today with important information on Section 8 applications through the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). As you may know, the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) offers our city's most vulnerable population and our low/moderate-income families the opportunity to obtain housing units within our general market. NYCHA provides over 241,117 rental subsidies through the Section 8 Program – and that number will only grow in the comin years.

The deadline to apply to the Section 8 waitlist is Sunday, June 9, 2024 at 11:59 PM. Apply online here. To see answers to frequently asked questions on the Housing Choice Voucher and NYCHA, click here.

Please note the following four categories of referrals that NYCHA’s waiting list is open to:

  • Homeless referrals from a New York City (NYC) agency, and the New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) for youth in the Family Unification Program (FUP) whose assistance is expiring because of the term limit.
  • Referral from ACS for Foster Youth to Independence (FYI) assistance for youth leaving foster care who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
  • Victims of domestic violence and intimidated witnesses.
  • Referrals from NYCHA’s Public Housing Operations Department for public housing

Once you have submitted your application, it is your responsibility to inform NYCHA if there are any changes to your contact information (e.g., address, telephone number, email address, etc.), income, or household composition. Make sure to submit only one application, as duplicate applications will be rejected. The Section 8 waitlist is expected to be established by August 1, 2024.

For more information on the Section 8 Waitlist application process, or if you need assistance with a matter affecting you or your family, please do not hesitate to contact my Brooklyn office at (718) 287-1142.

Sincerely,
