Fifty-nine years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Griswold v. Connecticut -- a case that helped establish the right to reproductive privacy and determined that laws governing contraceptive use were unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment. Today, that freedom is under attack.

Since the Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, Republicans have waged a full scale campaign to destroy Americans' reproductive rights at the state level. That was just the beginning, John.

In this post-Roe landscape, nearly one in three women live in a state where abortion is banned or mostly banned. Last April, a Trump-appointed judge in Texas ordered the FDA to suspend its approval for mifepristone, a key drug used in medication abortion. This February, Alabama's Republican-led state Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos created via in vitro fertilization (IVF) have the same legal protections as children. Now, Republicans have their sights set on a new objective -- banning birth control.

The only way to defend and restore our rights is to elect pro-choice candidates up and down the ballot. EMILYs List remains committed to electing the Democratic pro-choice women who'll lead the fight for contraception access and safeguard the legacy of Griswold.
