Earlier this week, Mexico elected its first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum. This makes Sheinbaum the first female president in all of North America.

It turns out, this moment was made possible by an extremely concerted effort to increase women’s participation in Mexico’s young democracy – including the passage of a gender parity law. At Her Bold Move, we are taking this news seriously – and learning all we can about Mexico’s approach to gender parity in government.

According to a recent article by the Washington Post, women in Mexico didn’t gain the right to vote for president until 1953 – about 70 years ago. Not to mention, as recently as 9 years ago, the country didn’t have even one female governor.

Now, Mexico, a country “famous for its macho culture,” has surpassed the United States in gender parity. In addition to electing Claudia Sheinbaum as president, women hold half the seats in Mexico’s legislature (almost DOUBLE the percent of the U.S. Congress), and women lead Mexico’s Supreme Court and central bank.

According to FastCompany, "Almost as soon as the gender parity law was passed, the political arena in the country started to shift dramatically. Important changes, like decriminalizing abortion, soon followed."

This is a perfect example of the world we are working to build; a world in which women hold equal stakes in our government – and that representation is reflected in our country’s policies. Will you help fund our work towards this vision by chipping in $20.24 or more today?

How did they get there? The Washington Post writes, “Female politicians, lawyers, academics, and activists lobbied for years to set quotas for female candidates. In 2019, they succeeded, and Mexico passed a constitutional amendment requiring parity for all elected offices.”

Not a single member of Congress voted against it. – Can you imagine?!

To ensure that the laws stuck, they also established “strong institutions to interpret and enforce electoral laws.” Activists fought so hard that it became “costly” to oppose such initiatives, and “politicians who made sexist comments about female rivals could be stripped of the right to run [for office].”

Meanwhile, America is falling behind – even losing ground on progress we’ve made in this category since 2018. We can and we must implement the strategies that paved the way for Claudia Sheinbaum’s success. At Her Bold Move, we are building a movement to do just that. We have been putting together our own coalition of female politicians, lawyers, academics, and activists right here in the U.S. working together toward much-needed reform.

As we work to get individual women candidates elected – especially in states with abortion bans – we are also working to make this issue a priority for elected leaders and lawmakers. It will take activism from both angles to see the real change we’re looking to make within the next decade.
