Flooding across Texas's 17th

Throughout this week, we continued to see flooding and dangerous weather conditions in all corners of Texas’s 17th Congressional District. On Thursday, I surveyed damage to Leon County with Judge Byron Ryder, County Commissioner TJ Foley, Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Hickman, and State Representative Angelia Orr. I also visited the Walker County Storm Shelter as they host government agencies in this storm recovery time. There, I met with representatives from various agencies including FEMA, the Small Business Administration, and the American Red Cross. We discussed securing federal assistance and distributing aid to our affected communities. Texans in Trinity and Walker Counties are eligible to apply for FEMA’s Individual Assistance programs. Governor Abbott’s request for Individual Assistance remains under review for Falls and Leon Counties. If you are in the counties approved to receive assistance, you can apply online at disasterassistance.gov or call 800-621-3362. In these coming days and weeks, my team and I will continue to monitor the damage and assist in acquiring federal aid.

D-Day: 80th Anniversary

This Thursday marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day, a day that displayed the finest of human ingenuity and courage. The heroism displayed on the beaches of Normandy paved the way for liberation in Europe and defended the freedoms we continue to enjoy. The courage of the soldiers that changed the course of history on June 6, 1944, serves as an example of dedication and sacrifice at the highest level. As we remember, let us take inspiration from their valor and continue the cause of defending freedom.

On Wednesday, I met education students visiting with the  American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE). The group was made of representatives from our very own Sam Houston State University (SHSU) and Stephen F. Austin State University (SFASU). Students and faculty from the respective schools of education at these institutions displayed their dedication to excellence in their field in their visit to the Capitol, engaging in discussions with lawmakers to ensure quality PK-12 education throughout America. Our teachers play a leading role in shaping the future of our country, and I am appreciative to AACTE for their involvement in educator preparation..

I received a visit from HMG Healthcare, a long-term healthcare company that owns and operates skilled nursing facilities in Texas. HMG serves Waco, Pflugerville, and Nacogdoches as well as over 30 other locations. In our meeting, we discussed the importance of providing quality assistance for those patients in need of skilled services. Through collaboration between providers and government, we are taking care of specialty care.

On the House Floor this Week

H.R. 8580→ Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2025
This annual appropriations bill honors our commitment to our nation’s veterans by fully funding health care and benefits programs, bolsters our national security through robust funding for the Indo-Pacific region, and reins in the woke ideology pushed by the Biden Administration. This bill includes numerous provisions that I support, including protecting the Second Amendment rights of our veterans, prohibiting taxpayer funding from being used to fund abortion, and stopping subversive critical race theory and diversity, inclusion, and equity programming.

H.R. 8282→ Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act
In May, the International Criminal Court (ICC) filed applications for arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The ICC ignores atrocities by Iran and the barbaric Hamas terrorists but threatens a democracy like Israel with baseless charges as she fights for her survival. The ICC’s hypocrisy seems to know no bounds.

The Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act (ICCA), of which I am proud to be a cosponsor, is a robust response to protect our country and our partners and allies by deterring the ICC from proceeding with these illegitimate cases where they have no jurisdiction. If the ICC continues to improperly intervene in these cases, this bill would require the President to impose sanctions on the Court and any parties assisting the Court in its efforts.
