This week, President Biden authorized U.S. immigration officials to deport migrants without even hearing their asylum claims.

Let’s be clear: this is an outright betrayal of everything we stand for as a nation of immigrants.

This is the harshest border policy we’ve seen from a Democratic president, and it’s disgraceful.

Seeking asylum is a legal right recognized worldwide. People fleeing violence, persecution, and unimaginable hardship depend on this right.

Biden is not just turning away those in desperate need—he’s once again ignoring our nation's commitment to human rights.

Meanwhile, my opponent, Jimmy Gomez, has remained completely silent on this issue.

Silence in the face of such blatant injustice is nothing short of complicity. We can’t afford leaders who shy away from standing up against policies that dehumanize and oppress.

The Biden administration and Democratic leadership need to stop using the GOP’s own playbook and start working towards building a fair immigration system.

As the child of immigrants, this issue is personal. My parents came here seeking a better life, and the thought of turning away others who have no choice but to flee to the border is both heart-wrenching and infuriating.

I leaned on that formative experience when I practiced in immigration litigation, where I defended and represented undocumented families in deportation proceedings to try and stop unjust removals.

I recently traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border between Arizona and Mexico.

It was an eye-opening experience, one that every Congressmember and congressional candidate should undertake if they’re going to vote on border legislation.

Seeing the wall, talking with migrant families, hearing their stories, and witnessing the good work being done by shelters and missions gave me a real understanding of the human impact of our policies.

It’s appalling that we’re spending billions to make the border more dangerous when we should be investing in humane, practical solutions.
