*Road Trip – to the Stars!*

Your parks are perfect for stargazing because their night skies are darker [ [link removed] ] than those over towns. The darker the sky, the more celestial objects you'll see – like this summer's Perseid meteor shower [ [link removed] ]. Some parks have darker skies than others, including these:

* Copper Breaks [ [link removed] ] – be sure to visit the longhorn herd [ [link removed] ] while you're there.
* Davis Mountains [ [link removed] ] – nearby McDonald Observatory [ [link removed] ] zooms you in on the stars.
* Kickapoo Cavern [ [link removed] ] – is open Fri.-Mon. Don't miss the park's 1 million+ bats. The skies are so dark, bat watching [ [link removed] ] is best at dawn.

Many parks have stargazing [ [link removed] ] events. Find more parks with unusually dark skies in the "Texas Parks and Wildlife" magazine story Stargazing [ [link removed] ].

*We've Got Tons of Summer Fun for Kids*

*Heat Hacks for You and Your Dog*

Summer in Texas is a lot of fun and a lot of hot. If you plan to visit a park during the day, activities will be more enjoyable and safer if you use these heat hacks:

* *Wear lightweight clothes*, a wet neck bandana and a hat.
* *Hydrate* by drinking 16 oz. of water each hour.
* **Eat salty snacks** to replace salt lost to sweating.

Help keep your pet safe with these tips:

* *Bring a bowl and extra water* just for the dog.
* *Check surface heat* – paws can blister on hot surfaces.
* *Take breaks in the shade* to let your dog cool off.
