President's Message

June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, recognizing the impact of  LGBTQIA+ individuals and aiming to advance civil rights, justice, and equitable opportunity for all, including  LGBTQIA+ youth. The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights works to ensure ALL students have access to an education free from discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity and offers Resources for LGBTQIA+ Students Students.

NASN believes that to provide culturally competent care, school staff and communities should institute affirming policies that support  LGBTQIA+ youth. School nurses are uniquely positioned to help  LGBTQIA+ youth by creating  LGBTQIA+-affirming spaces, guiding youth toward resources, advocating for school-wide protections, and assuring youth that their identities and feelings are normal and appropriate.

Research has shown that school environments contribute to the success of adolescents in general and LGBTQAI+ adolescents in particular. The Virtual NASN2024 session Understanding the Inequities of LGBTQIA+ Adolescents in the School Setting to Improve Health Outcomes will equip school nurses with the tools to foster a more culturally inclusive environment and improve health outcomes for this population in the school setting.

Managing Chronic Health Conditions

June is Migraine and Headache Awareness Month

Did you know that headache-related disability is a significant contributor to school absenteeism and decreased quality of life? This is why Migraine and Headache Awareness Month and the dedicated efforts to raise public knowledge about headache disorders, empower individuals affected by these conditions, and advocate for advancements in treatment and research are so important.

In honor of this observance, you can check out NASN's NCPD program, The Emerging School Nurse Leader Role in Decreasing School Absenteeism in Children with Migraine Headache, which highlights the Headache Action Plan Project for Youth (HAPPY) and how timely identification and effective management of childhood migraine could prevent chronification and long-term disability.
