I come bearing tidings of great joy:
VIRGINIA REPEALED THEIR VOTER ID LAW!!!!!
This. Is. Huge.
Thanks to the incredibly hard work of the Virginia House of Delegates- and the people who elected them- Virginia voters no longer have to show ID to vote.
Virginia is the first state to voluntarily repeal its voter ID law and it's proof that it can be done. Spread The Vote is proud to have helped bring new voters with new IDs to the polls in 2017, 18, and 19 to be a small part of making this happen.
So does this law mean that we're closing shop? Not even close. For one thing, our clients still need IDs for food, shelter, jobs, and more. Second, 77% of our clients have never voted before and still need help. And, third, now that the law has been repealed, STV will be working hard to educate voters across the state that they no longer need an ID to vote! Huzzah!
I know times are hard right now, but this is why we have hope and hustle. The people of Virginia made this happen, and we will keep working to make sure that everyone in this country who needs an ID, gets one, and gets to the polls.
Stay strong,
Kat
