Global South Shows the Way: shifting the political stakes for gender justice
Dear Colleagues,
While this week’s news in Mexico was historic, we know there’s still work to do.
We don’t celebrate Claudia Sheinbaum solely because she’s the first female-identified politician (who, while accomplished, has a mixed grade on her feminist scorecard) was elected President.
We celebrate as an acknowledgment to the strength and courage of the feminist movements in the Global South fueled by some of the most innovative WFN members including Fondo Semillas, Fondo Centro Americao de Mujeres (FCAM), Vida Afrolatina, Global Fund for Women, Urgent Action Fund, and partners like Prospera INWF.
For decades these leaders have been a lifeline to underfunded frontline organizations. Because of their collective struggle, we now have a political shift in Mexico that’s a lifetime ahead of where the U.S. and other Global North countries are today.
The data is clear. Feminist movements are powerhouses for social change.
In Mexico feminist movements enshrined gender parity into Mexico’s constitution, decriminalized abortion and made anti-feminist views a political liability. It is these movements that have shattered hundreds of years of history.
As Elena Poniatowska, one of Mexico's most distinguished writers, shared recently about this moment, “This is how I imagined (it). I worked for it.”
So before we get back to work, let’s celebrate for all the chingonas in Mexico, past, present and beyond.

In an event co-sponsored in part by WFN, the Census Equity Initiative (CEI) will celebrate Pride Month with a funder briefing about LGBTQ inclusion. In 2024, for the first time ever, the Census Bureau will test questions that allow LGBTQ people to identify themselves on the American Community Survey (ACS). Learn more about the work happening, the opportunities for funders to get involved, and what success would mean for LGBTQ people and communities. This briefing is open to funders, philanthropy-serving organizations, and other philanthropic partners.

Funders For Justice (FFJ) will host a panel discussion featuring FFJ Movement Advisors from across the social justice sector to discuss how Healing Justice (HJ) practices are inherently PIC abolitionist and how they use Healing Justice to fortify their vital work. After the panel, funders and philanthropic consultants working at the intersections of gender-based violence, child sexual abuse (CSA), and youth advocacy will share strategies to create and support safety systems that move beyond criminalization and the carceral system.

Join I Be Black Girl for a day packed with deep belly laughter, soulful music, and joy as they cut the ribbon to officially open the doors of the Anarcha Center. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced the release of the Report to Congress and the accompanying National Strategy to Improve Maternal Mental Health Care with recommendations developed by the Task Force on Maternal Mental Health.
Two-thirds of domestic violence survivors report staying longer in an abusive relationship or returning to that relationship due to pressing financial needs. The Center for American Progress has a new report on The State of Safe Leave. The report analyzes and catalogs the safe leave provisions of state-paid sick time and paid family and medical leave laws as well as state laws providing unpaid leave in connection with violence.
The FrameWorks Institute and Leading for Kids recently released, Collective Caregiving: A Frame for Talking About What Kids and Families Need to Thrive, dedicated to reframing how we think and talk about kids by broadening Americans’ understanding of care. By helping people think about care as collective, inclusive, and expansive, we can move the narrative in a more positive direction.
