Most folks know my name because of my 13-hour filibuster to defend reproductive rights in Texas. But moments like that don’t spring up overnight: I first got my start in public service on the Fort Worth City Council, then worked my way up through the Texas state legislature. Now, I’m running for Congress to flip a red district blue.

I am living proof that Democrats can win, even in states like Texas, but only if we keep building the pipeline of women leaders from the bottom up.

That’s why I’m so proud to support Emerge as they recruit Democratic women to run for office and give them the training they need to win. And right now, they’re taking on one of their biggest challenges yet: supporting a brand-new affiliate in Texas to elect Democratic women across my home state. 

I told the folks at Emerge that I’d help them raise $5,000 to help this new affiliate hit the ground running so they can do this important work. I know from experience that we need women’s voices leading our country and standing up to the GOP – speaking up for those who have been forgotten or ignored. I don’t want my two grandbabies to grow up in a world where white men get to make all the decisions about their education, their planet, even their bodies. The only way to stop that from happening is to lift as we climb – and empower the next generation of women leaders to take up this fight.
