John,
After the 2020 presidential election, a vengeful Donald Trump summoned his supporters to wage a violent attack on the US Capitol to prevent Joe Biden’s victory from being certified. The MAGA movement proved then that it stands in opposition to democracy, and will resort to any tactic to get its way.
There is a grave threat looming after November’s election, in that same lame duck period between the election and the swearing in of the newly elected Congress. The debt ceiling is suspended through Jan 1, 2025, but if no action is taken, economic calamity would be unleashed.
Here’s the worst part: No matter what happens in November, MAGA Mike Johnson will still be in charge of the House when the deadline comes. In the event that MAGA is wiped out―if Trump loses along with his MAGA faithful downballot―a lame duck Speaker Johnson could wield the debt limit like a weapon and lash out at the American economy.
Remember: Mike Johnson used his very first speech after being elected Speaker to call for the “immediate” creation of a closed-door commission to destroy Social Security and Medicare. As a lame duck Speaker with nothing to lose, he could force Congress to choose between cutting Social Security and Medicare or demolishing the whole economy. He’d have the backing of many of his fellow Republicans. We can’t be caught flat-footed.
We need to be ready for a post-election debt ceiling fight that would have Social Security and Medicare in its crosshairs. Can you rush a donation to keep our movement strong?
We’ve already talked to Democrats who are organizing to eliminate the debt ceiling once and for all. Remember: The debt ceiling has no constitutional basis. It serves no purpose beyond provoking crises.
But, Mike Johnson, who rose to power within the House during Trump’s attempt to steal the 2020 election, which led to the January 6th attack on the Capitol, is a true MAGA believer. And it is not above him to hold our economy hostage in exchange for cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
Let’s make this the last debt ceiling showdown and eliminate the debt limit once and for all! Rush a donation to fuel our organizing!
Thank you,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
