Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wants you to pay more to watch movies and listen to music.

The federal government just introduced a new streaming tax for services such as Netflix and Spotify.

Trudeau knows a streaming tax will cost you more. He even promised not to impose one.

“The reality is that taxpayers will be the ones to pay those taxes,” Trudeau said in 2018, when asked about streaming platforms paying higher taxes.

“We … promised not to raise taxes for taxpayers who are already paying enough for their digital subscriptions and internet.”

Now Trudeau is breaking that promise.

The federal government just announced it’s going to make streaming companies like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Spotify pay a five per cent tax on their Canadian revenues.

Experts are warning Trudeau’s streaming tax will mean higher prices for you.

“At a time when affordability is a major concern, Canadian consumers should prepare for a new … fee on their bill,” warns University of Ottawa Law Professor Michael Geist.

“As Canada’s affordability crisis remains a significant challenge, the government needs to avoid adding to this burden,” said Graham Davies, President and CEO of the Digital Media Association, who called the announcement a “discriminatory tax.”
