Mercy Corps is
implementing solutions in communities around the world where climate
change, poverty, and conflict have made it difficult to get enough to eat.

Margaret received training from Mercy Corps to become a community health
volunteer. She teaches others in her community in Kenya about gardening,
nutrition, and energy-saving food preparation methods.
What is permagardening exactly?
Permagardening combines the techniques of permaculture and bio-intensive
gardening. Permaculture uses naturally available resources in a manner
that doesn’t produce any waste. Bio-intensive gardening aims to increase
yields in small spaces while using less water and energy than traditional
gardening methods.
What are the benefits of permagardening?
Permagardens are designed to produce in both the rainy and dry seasons, so
families have access to diverse foods year-round, even under certain
extreme weather conditions such as drought. The gardens are designed to be
sustainable, improve soil and water health, and maximize local resources.
Where is Mercy Corps implementing permagardening?
Mercy Corps is training local farmers and families in arid regions, such
as Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In these communities,
scarce natural resources combined with prolonged drought have made it
difficult for families to get enough food to eat. By learning
permagardening techniques, farmers are able to grow enough food for their
families and make a small profit selling any additional produce.
This work to help farmers and families facing hunger grow food is just one
way Mercy Corps, with the support of people like you, is combating the
acute effects of climate change. Thank you for your dedication to helping
communities overcome crises around the world.
Now take one moment to test your knowledge on permagardening by answering
the question above.
Good luck,
The Mercy Corps team
P.S. Keyhole gardens, named for their shape, use permagardening techniques
to grow nutritious food in harsh climates. [ [link removed] ]You can learn more about
