Governor Gordon Lauds WGA’s 40 Years of Advocacy for the West
Wyo Chief Exec: “Association provides collaborative setting for policy discussion …”
CHEYENNE, Wyo – Governor Mark Gordon (R-WYO) today congratulated the Western Governors’ Association (WGA) in celebration of the organization's 40 years of service advocating for the 22 westernmost United States and US territories. Governor Gordon served as Chairman of the bipartisan association this year, ascending previously from the role of Vice Chair.
“WGA is a vital force for Wyoming and western states. At a time when our nation faces increasing dissension, and our citizens grow weary of bipartisan discord and political bickering, the association provides a setting for thoughtful policy discussion and development, and collective action on issues of importance to the West,” Governor Gordon said.
WGA regularly weighs in on federal policy based on resolutions that have been approved by member governors. Recent outreach efforts include:
- Correspondence specifying policy recommendations to the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Federal Lands regarding improved access and opportunities for hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation on America’s Federal Lands.
- Correspondence with the Senate Subcommittee on Indian Affairs to address significant law enforcement shortages, urging the Bureau of Indian Affairs to increase the number of tribal officers on lands under tribal and federal jurisdiction.
WGA correspondences often lead to testimony before congressional committees, the association helps to set agendas, and protect and promote western interests. A library of the association’s policy reports is available on WGA’s 40th anniversary website.
During WGA’s two-day annual meeting next week Governor Gordon will release his Chairman’s Initiative Decarbonizing the West and pass the gavel to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM). .

This important legacy has continued under Governor Gordon’s leadership as WGA Chair due to his unwavering commitment to working together to solve the unique and pressing challenges facing the West. I am excited to see the change that his Decarbonizing the West initiative unlocks throughout the region and across the country.”
PBS’ journalist Judy Woodruff will keynote at the meeting and moderate a special panel discussion with the current and former governors which will be live streamed.
