Replenishing Groundwater in the San Joaquin Valley
Caitlin Peterson, Ellen Hanak, Zaira Joaquín Morales, Kyle Greenspan, and Spencer Cole
Groundwater is a vital, but threatened, component of California’s water supply. In our latest report, we look at the growth of groundwater recharge in the San Joaquin Valley, sharing new data from a survey of dozens of urban and agricultural water managers. We also explain the challenges facing this vital resource in an updated fact sheet.
These two publications are the first in a series exploring the challenges and promises of achieving groundwater sustainability. Later this month, we’ll examine how drought is impacting implementation of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act—and look at patterns of land use by a major groundwater user: California’s agriculture.
