When I developed uterine fibroids, it was like having an uninvited guest take over my body for years. Eventually, the painful and unpredictable menstrual cycles left me with no choice but to resort to getting a hysterectomy.
For too long, women have suffered in silence due to fibroids. Yet, despite being extremely common, the cause is unknown.
This legislation would award grants to increase early detection of and intervention for uterine fibroids, education and awareness programs, and research. The U-FIGHT Act also addresses Asherman’s syndrome, uterine scar tissue build-up following surgery, as well as disparities in pain control and management as it relates to uterine fibroids.
Uterine fibroids are extremely common, frequently painful, and disproportionally impact Black women – yet there is no comprehensive federal program to address fibroids. I am proud to be leading the charge to change that.
