Friend, this is sad but unfortunately not surprising.

First, photos showed Justice Samuel Alito and his family flew two politically charged flags outside their homes: an upside-down American flag, a symbol adopted by Trump supporters who claim the 2020 election was “stolen,” and an “Appeal to Heaven” flag recently associated with a theocratic ideology and carried by those who attacked the Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

With public trust in the Supreme Court at an all-time low, I and other of my Senate colleagues have called for Justice Alito to honor the judiciary’s mandate to remain impartial.

Now, Justice Alito has refused requests to recuse himself, maintaining that he has not acted in a manner in which his “impartiality might reasonably be questioned.” Given the facts, it defies logic that Justice Alito could arrive at such a conclusion.

I don’t blame you if you’re experiencing déjà vu right now, friend. We were here just over a month ago when Justice Clarence Thomas blatantly ignored calls to recuse himself from cases regarding January 6th because his wife, Ginni, was reportedly plotting to keep Trump in office.

With their ties to the election denier movement and refusal to recuse themselves, Justices Alito and Thomas are doing grave damage to the Supreme Court’s reputation and credibility. They demean and undermine the discipline and dedication the other seven sitting Justices demonstrate daily. They sully our history.

Immediate action is necessary to rein in corruption and reestablish trust in our nation’s highest court: That’s why I’ve just opened an urgent petition and am counting on 10,000 supporters to sign on now and demand a stronger code of ethics be established and enforced for Supreme Court justices. Please, add your name immediately. >>>

What is a democracy when public trust in its judicial system has crumbled? I don’t wish to find out, and I imagine you don’t either. Thank you for taking the urgent action this moment demands.
