On the latest episode ([link removed]) of the Center for Western Priorities' podcast, The Landscape, Kate and Aaron talk to Ray and BJ Trejo, a father and son who are helping lead the effort to protect the Mimbres Peaks in southern New Mexico.

The Mimbres Peaks National Monument proposal ([link removed]) would add protections for lands overseen by the Bureau of Land Management in Luna County, New Mexico near the city of Deming. The collaborative effort is locally-led by elected leaders, business owners, economic development advocates, hunters, youth leaders, conservationists, and students.

The proposal would protect approximately 245,000 acres ([link removed]) in an area that contains documented cultural and historic sites that continue to hold importance to modern day Tribes and Pueblos, and also provides diverse outdoor recreation opportunities including hunting, hiking, equestrian use, biking, camping, picnicking, photography, and more.

The episode is part of CWP's Road to 30: Postcards campaign ([link removed]) to share the stories of people behind efforts to protect special places across the country. For more information about the Mimbres Peaks campaign, and to sign a petition ([link removed]) in support of the proposal, please visit protectmimbrespeaks.org ([link removed]) .

** Quote of the day
------------------------------------------------------------

” Conservation groups, solar companies and government agencies should keep working on good-faith efforts—much more quickly, please—that would hasten renewable energy development while also protecting 30 percent of U.S. lands and waters by 2030 and 50 percent by 2050, goals that scientists say are crucial for biodiversity.”
