Empowered Women Voters and Candidates Unite at 42nd Annual Luncheon

At the annual Women Winning event to raise funds for upcoming pro-choice candidate campaigns in Minnesota, a slate of speakers talked about how the pro-choice movement can and should propel voters this fall. U.S. Representative Angie Craig said, “This is a pivotal point for women everywhere.Together we can fight back.”
Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan talked to the hundreds of mostly women in the room about the work that is ahead. “Sometimes it can feel overwhelming, or like what we are doing is not enough.”

US Senate Democratic Campaigns Ready Abortion Rights Blitz

Senate Democratic campaigns are launching a month-long blitz on reproductive rights, pressing Republicans on abortion as the second anniversary of the fall of Roe v. Wade approaches. Campaigns in all battleground states will partake, a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee aide told Axios.
The blitz will include paid advertising from the DSCC, events hosted by campaigns and local organizations, and social media activity. Senate Democrats will also spend this month voting on reproductive rights bills, marking an all-encompassing barrage from the party on abortion rights.
The bills have no chance of being considered in the Republican-controlled House, but aim to put Republicans in the tough position of voting against federal protections for contraception.

Texas’ New Plan for Responding to the Horror of Its Abortion Ban: Blame Doctors and Patients

Last week, in a widely watched case, the Texas Supreme Court rejected the claims of 2024 Women Winning Luncheon speaker, Amanda Zurawski, and her fellow plaintiffs that they had suffered injuries after being denied emergency access to abortion due to lack of clarity in the state’s abortion ban.
Zurawski v. State of Texas has offered an important model for lawyers seeking to chip away at sweeping state bans and even eventually undermine Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the 2022 decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. Now the state Supreme Court’s decision offers a preview of anti-choice groups’ plans to the medical tragedies across the nation that have been all too common after Dobbs: to blame physicians and hint that the life of the fetus ultimately counts as much as or more than that of the pregnant patient.
