Severe flooding has displaced over 200,000 people

Dear John,
It may have not hit headlines where you live but catastrophic flooding hit Kenya, and neighbouring Tanzania, last month.
Over 200,000 people have been displaced according to government estimates. Their homes, belongings and livelihoods swept away by flash flooding and deadly landslides. 200 people have lost their lives with many others still missing.

Kenya experienced above-average rainfall in October 2023 and now again since March. Meteorologists are pointing to the El Niño phenomenon and human-caused climate change.
Saturated land has killed livestock and destroyed thousands of acres of crops. Road and other infrastructure has also been damaged, delaying relief efforts.
Disaster response
Many of our partner organisations in Kenya have rushed to provide emergency support to those who have lost their homes.
Women’s rights organisations like Young Women’s Leadership Institute and Innovators 4 Climate Foundation sprang into action. They have already distributed food, clothing, bedding, and more for those setting up in temporary accommodation.
But they’re reporting that the need for emergency supplies is far more than what they can supply!

Who’s been affected
While high rainfall was experienced across Kenya a huge amount of destruction occurred in Nairobi and Mombasa. These are cities that have seen rapid population growth in the last few decades. Millions of people migrated from the countryside to these cities in search of a better life. Informal settlements have been constructed to meet the demand for housing. Some of these are constructed on flood-prone land next to rivers and lakes.
This means it’s the most low-income families that have been affected.

As Mombasa-based climate activists Innovators 4 Climate Foundation said of the crisis
“Remember, resilience is born from unity. Let us support one another with compassion and determination.”
Thank you in advance for your support.
With best wishes,
