Dear John,
This month marks the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, when the Chinese military crushed large prodemocracy protests in Beijing and elsewhere in 1989. Now, the same erasure of Tiananmen is underway in Hong Kong.
Last week, Hong Kong authorities announced that they had arrested seven people for posting “seditious” messages commemorating the massacre. Among those arrested was Chow Hang-tung, a prominent human rights lawyer who was already behind bars.
